Embarking on a journey through a soft, needle-covered path in a hemlock forest, I stumbled upon a mesmerizing sight that appeared to be a fire flickering in the woods. To my surprise, it was actually sunlight reflecting off a small pool nestled among the trees. This delightful vernal pool, with its shallow waters, was a sight to behold.
The late spring day was warm, and the pool had already begun to shrink as it relied on rainfall and forest runoff for sustenance. With no permanent inlet or outlet, these small and ephemeral pools are crucial for the growth of various species like frogs, salamanders, and insects. Their ability to dry out by late summer creates an ideal habitat for these creatures without allowing fish to survive.

As we walk through the forest, we often fail to recognize the significance of these vernal pools, which play a vital role in preserving the landscape and its inhabitants.
