Explore the Majesty of the Drakensberg Mountains
As the sun rises at 6am, I find myself on a bumpy, unpaved road in the back of a Toyota, heading towards an extraordinary hiking experience in the Drakensberg mountains. Despite the challenging conditions of the road and surrounding mist, I can sense that something remarkable awaits me in this vast mountain range.
Located approximately four hours south of Johannesburg, the Drakensberg mountains are a sprawling expanse of rugged beauty, encompassing nearly 940 square miles of land designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient rock art adorning the caves, the playful baboons in the valleys, and the intricate network of footpaths weaving through the mountains make this a hiking destination like no other.
Upon my arrival in the Drakensberg region, I am greeted by a landscape that feels like a breath of fresh air after the hustle and bustle of the city. The lush green foothills, the herds of hartebeest, and the traditional rondavels dotting the countryside create a pastoral scene that is both calming and invigorating. Driving past chameleon crossing signs and weaver bird nests hanging from trees, I am awestruck by the sheer natural beauty that surrounds me.
At the Cavern Resort & Spa, nestled in the hills with its resident red-winged starlings and well-exercised spaniels, I meet Mike Mlangeni, my hiking guide for the day. A proud Zulu and avid Liverpool fan, Mike outlines the trail we will be embarking on the next day. With a 4am departure time and a rugged four-wheel drive transfer to the trailhead, it’s clear that this hike will be no walk in the park. But as Mike reassures me, the journey will be well worth the effort.
Setting out before dawn the next day, we tackle the challenging Amphitheatre hike, a 7.5-mile circuit that promises a breathtaking finale on an otherworldly escarpment. Despite the initial foggy conditions and slow progress, the moment the landscape begins to reveal itself, I feel a surge of excitement and exhilaration. Climbing the chain ladders, each around 78ft and 50ft in length, we reach a grassy plateau where a vibrant malachite sunbird flits by, adding a splash of color to the misty surroundings.
As we ascend to an altitude of over 2,438m, the landscape unfolds before us in all its glory. A river meanders across the plateau, and the panoramic views from this vantage point are simply awe-inspiring. This is the magic of the Drakensberg mountains – a place where nature’s grandeur and tranquility converge to create an unforgettable hiking experience.
