EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — An explosive outburst occurred in a recent New York Giants meeting, as Defensive Coordinator Wink Martindale confronted Head Coach Brian Daboll regarding the firing of two key members of his staff.
Martindale’s temper reached a boiling point after the dismissal of outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins and defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins, both of whom joined the Giants from Baltimore along with Martindale. Drew Wilkins was Martindale’s right-hand man, adding insult to injury.
The contentious relationship between Daboll and Martindale has finally erupted, and speculation is rife around an inevitable separation after reports emerged in November about their strained interactions.
Sources suggest that Martindale’s resignation is imminent after his blowup in the meeting. As of Tuesday evening, there was still no word from Martindale, who was already back home in Sarasota, Florida after Monday’s incident.
Martindale still has a year left on his contract with the Giants. However, his reported $3 million worth is at stake, and further conflict could ensue if the Giants block his path to another team upon his resignation.
Should Martindale become available, there is expected to be considerable interest in his services. Recent opponents have praised his defensive schemes, and it’s known that both the Los Angeles Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles, facing uncertainty in their defensive coordinator positions, could come calling.
The Martindale-Daboll debacle transpired immediately after the Giants front office indicated that they anticipated both Martindale and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka to stay on for the coming season.
The mood was already grim as they had sacked special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, and tensions were building up around both Martindale and Kafka throughout the season.
Daboll was reportedly insistent on firing Drew Wilkins to dismantle what was perceived as a separate faction within the Giants coaching staff. Martindale and Drew Wilkins were suspected of undermining Daboll and answering only to each other and the owners.
While the Giants have experienced both highs and lows under Martindale’s defensive guidance this season, the situation seems untenable and could escalate further.
