Chris Shiflett Collaborates with Fender on a New Signature Telecaster
Renowned guitarist Chris Shiflett has recently shared exciting news of his partnership with Fender on another signature Telecaster model. After the success of his initial signature guitar, Shiflett has hinted at the impressive features of his new Charcoal Frost prototype, praising its playability and exceptional sound quality.
Having already tested the prototype in Washington, D.C., the guitar may soon move towards full-scale production. It will be intriguing to see how this upcoming model differs from Shiflett’s previous 2012 build, which was inspired by his favorite ’72 Tele Deluxe. The earlier version showcased Fender CS1 and CS2 humbucker pickups and a rosewood fretboard with low action. Additionally, a premium Masterbuilt variant with P-90s was also made available, albeit at a higher price point.
During a conversation with MusicRadar, Shiflett disclosed details about the upcoming signature model. He confirmed that the new guitar will feature P-90 pickups similar to his Custom Shop Telecaster but will be more affordable compared to the previous Master-Built version.
In an effort to maintain affordability without compromising quality, Shiflett mentioned that pickups specialist Tim Shaw has been involved in creating budget-friendly versions of the noiseless P-90s used in the original build. These modifications aim to offer a similar sound profile to the higher-end Fralin pickups.
Shiflett further revealed that he has tested prototypes of the new Telecaster in various colors, with a Charcoal Frost finish being particularly impressive during a live performance in Washington, D.C. The guitar’s sound quality was commended, indicating a promising future for this signature model.
Analyzing images from the performance, it is evident that the new Telecaster continues the tradition of featuring a rosewood fretboard with block inlays, a departure from the dot inlays seen on previous models. The presence of four control knobs adds to the versatility and functionality of the instrument.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of the recent release of Epiphone and Dave Grohl’s DG-335, another highly-anticipated Foo Fighters signature model. The collaboration between Shiflett and Fender promises an exciting addition to the world of signature guitars, catering to musicians seeking quality craftsmanship at an accessible price point.
