Deceit and threats- that’s what the case of two Georgia election workers is all about. Lawyers for the women have produced malicious messages they received in a D.C. courtroom. These stem from Rudy Giuliani’s accusatory statements following the 2020 election. Giuliani’s false claims were taken as gospel by Donald Trump and his supporters, leading to disturbing harassment for the wronged women. After being found guilty in a defamation lawsuit brought by Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, Giuliani now faces the prospect of requital. How much he will pay is up for dispute.
The tangible and emotional toll of this defamation is staggering. The women’s lawyers have suggested damages of up to $47 million for the ruin of their reputations. That figure is exclusive of additional punitive compensation.
Giuliani’s defense, however, contends that repercussions should not be so severe. They argue that the former mayor is not the direct source of the threats and harassment.
Should these defamatory actions go unpunished? The reverberations of Giuliani’s crusade should not be the unfortunate upshot of politics. The defense attests Giuliani’s guilt, but Giuliani’s attorney, Joseph Sibley, argues that the amount of money they are asking for is simply excessive. He asserts that he will ask for a fair sum from the jury.
