How Motherhood Completely Changed Lily Allen’s Music Career

Impact of Motherhood on Lily Allen’s Music Career

Lily Allen openly acknowledged that she feels having children led to the downfall of her singing career.

In a recent episode of the “Radio Times Podcast,” Allen humorously stated, “My children ruined my career.”

Allen, who shares two daughters with her ex-husband Sam Cooper, expressed that motherhood had a negative impact on her music career.

She elaborated on this by mentioning that although she adores her daughters, Ethel and Marnie, they hindered her chances of success in the pop music industry.

The British singer-songwriter, who gained fame at the age of 21 with her hit single “Smile,” confessed that juggling between motherhood and a music career was incredibly challenging.

Despite releasing successful albums like “Alright, Still” and “It’s Not Me, It’s You” before becoming a mother, Allen faced difficulties in maintaining her musical momentum after giving birth.

Allen emphasized that the notion of “having it all” is unrealistic and that individuals have to make sacrifices when it comes to balancing career aspirations and family obligations.

She revealed that her decision to prioritize her daughters over her music career stemmed from her own childhood experiences of feeling neglected by her parents.

Unlike some individuals who prioritize their careers over their children, Allen chose to step back from the spotlight and dedicate her time to raising her daughters.

As a result, Allen feels proud of her daughters’ well-rounded personalities and is content with her decision to prioritize their upbringing over her singing career.

Reflecting on her musical journey, Allen admitted that her albums released after becoming a mother, such as “Sheezus” and “No Shame,” did not achieve the same commercial success as her earlier works.

Although she initially expressed intent to release a fifth album, Allen has since shifted her focus to acting, starring in various stage plays and films.

Her marriage to “Stranger Things” actor David Harbour in 2020 has also influenced her career choices, leading her to explore opportunities in the entertainment industry beyond music.

Despite the challenges she faced in balancing motherhood and her music career, Allen remains grateful for the experiences and opportunities that have come her way.
