Is your child growing up faster than other kids? It could be central precocious puberty (CPP), a condition that causes sexual maturity to start earlier than usual. Puberty can impact your child in various ways, and it may be confusing or embarrassing for them if it happens too early. But don’t worry, you and your doctor can help guide them through this process.
Here are some important topics to discuss:
Body Changes
According to Dr. Jami Josefson, an endocrinologist at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, it’s essential to reassure your child that early body changes are normal. Dr. Josefson recommends reading puberty books with your child, such as the Care & Keeping of You series by the American Girl doll company.
Dr. Alla Vash-Margita, chief of pediatric and adolescent gynecology at Yale Medicine, emphasizes the importance of explaining pubertal changes based on your child’s age and maturity level. For younger children, she might refer to it as a “transition” from childhood to teenage years.
For older children, she explains everything from breast development to periods, using visual aids to help them understand.
Medication
Dr. Vash-Margita notes that it’s common for children with CPP to take puberty blockers, especially if early puberty impacts their growth. These medications can pause or reverse the maturing process until your child is older.
She also uses illustrations to explain why the medication is necessary and how it works.
