Israel’s Intense Siege on Gaza’s Largest Hospital Sparks Fierce Battle

The Gaza Strip’s Major Hospital Faces Heavy Fighting

Explosions and ‍gunfire rocked the⁤ Gaza Strip’s largest hospital as Israeli forces carried out a second consecutive day⁤ of raids on the facility. According to the military, they had killed 50 Hamas militants within the hospital premises. However, there was no independent verification that the deceased were actually combatants.

The relentless assault dealt a severe blow to the ‌Shifa medical complex, which‍ had only just started to resume operations following⁤ a devastating Israeli incursion in ⁢November. The situation was dire for thousands of Palestinian patients, medical personnel, and displaced individuals who found themselves trapped within the sprawling compound ‍as intense clashes ‍erupted between Israeli troops and Hamas fighters in the nearby areas.

Eyewitnesses described the harrowing scene, with Emy⁤ Shaheen reporting heavy bombardment and continuous ⁢tank and artillery fire‌ near Shifa. She mentioned a large fire that had been burning near the hospital for hours. The Israeli military justified ‍its ⁢raid on Shifa⁣ by claiming that Hamas fighters were using the hospital as a base to ⁣launch attacks.

The surge in violence in Gaza City served as a stark reminder of Hamas’ enduring ⁤presence in the northern region, despite previous Israeli‍ assertions of control. Israel’s offensive in Gaza, triggered by a Hamas attack in southern Israel in October, has resulted in over 31,800 Palestinian casualties. The situation in northern Gaza is dire, with much of the area reduced to rubble.⁢ An expert on hunger crises warned ⁢of widespread malnutrition, ‌with 70% of the population facing catastrophic hunger and the looming threat of famine.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated‌ his ‍intentions⁤ to push into Rafah, the southernmost town in Gaza that had yet to face a ground assault. Despite pleas from U.S. President⁣ Joe Biden for a different approach to target Hamas militants more precisely,⁢ Netanyahu remained steadfast ⁢in his plans. The U.S., a key ally of Israel, expressed concerns over an assault on Rafah due to the high population ‍density in the area. U.N. officials warned of a potential humanitarian disaster if Israeli troops advanced ⁢into Rafah.

Netanyahu agreed to send a delegation of Israeli‌ officials to Washington for discussions with the Biden administration on the Rafah situation. However, he made it clear that Israel ⁣was committed‌ to eliminating Hamas forces in ⁣Rafah through a ground operation, despite any alternative proposals put forth by the U.S. Airstrikes in Rafah overnight resulted in the destruction ‌of ⁢residential‍ buildings.

Overall, the escalating⁢ conflict in Gaza and the continued military operations highlight the ongoing challenges faced by both the civilian population and the belligerent parties involved in the conflict.
