USA Ship Sets Sail from Virginia to Assist in Building Gaza Port

American Ship Departing to Support Humanitarian Aid Mission in Gaza

On March⁤ 21, an American vessel set sail from⁢ Virginia to ⁤aid⁤ in the construction⁤ of a temporary pier in Gaza to facilitate the delivery of ‌humanitarian assistance. ⁢The MV Roy P. Benavidez embarked from Newport News, Va., carrying essential equipment and supplies for the U.S. Army’s initiative in the region. The materials⁤ will be unloaded by the Army’s ⁢7th⁣ Transportation Brigade,‌ which will be ‌responsible for ⁢constructing the temporary ⁢pier along the Mediterranean coast.

This effort, known as Joint Logistics-Over-the-Shore (JLOTS), is a crucial ⁣capability that enables the distribution of ⁤cargo from ‌ship to shore‍ in the absence of a ‍functional⁢ pier. Lt. Gen. John ⁤Sullivan, deputy commander of the U.S.⁣ Transportation⁤ Command,‍ highlighted the significance ⁢of ⁤JLOTS in providing support to areas where access to humanitarian aid is limited.

The MV Roy P. Benavidez, ⁣a former U.S. Navy Bob Hope-class roll-on, roll-off⁢ cargo vessel, is now part of the U.S. Department of Transportation⁣ Maritime Administration’s Ready Reserve‍ Fleet. The ship will assist four Army vessels from ⁣the 7th Transportation Brigade, which have been deployed to support the mission ⁣in ⁣Gaza.

According to ⁣Pentagon press secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, ‌the construction of ⁣the temporary pier is⁣ expected to be completed within 60 days of President Joe ‍Biden’s announcement ⁢during his State of the Union address. President Biden has also emphasized the importance of Israel’s cooperation in allowing humanitarian aid‍ into Gaza and ensuring the safety of ⁤aid workers in the region.

In response to‍ the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the United States has been ⁢conducting aid airdrops into Palestine. Since March‌ 2, ‍U.S. Central Command ‌has delivered over ‍204,000⁣ meals, 48,000 bottles of water, and more than 5,000 pounds of food ⁤items ‍to⁢ the affected population.

As the situation in Gaza remains critical, President Biden ⁤faces mounting‍ pressure from within his own party to address⁢ the crisis and distance himself from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The international community continues to ⁢monitor the developments in Gaza closely, with ⁢efforts⁤ underway ⁢to mitigate the suffering⁣ of the population⁣ in the‌ region.
