Celebrating the Achievement of Emmy-Winning Composer Laura Karpman
Renowned composer Laura Karpman, known for her impressive body of work in scoring both narrative features like The Marvels and documentaries like Pray Away, has recently secured her first Oscar nomination after more than three decades in the industry.
The much-deserved nomination comes for her outstanding jazz-infused score for Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction. The film’s musical landscape features a rich ensemble of instruments, including multiple pianos, saxophones, clarinets, trumpets, bass, drums, and a string orchestra, creating a dynamic and captivating sound.
Karpman’s approach to the score was heavily influenced by the film’s protagonist, Thelonius “Monk” Ellison, whose name alone evokes the spirit of jazz.
