Mastering Gas Control: Tips for Sensitive Stomachs

Do you know that the average person passes gas 14 to 23 times every day? Yep, it’s true! It’s healthy and normal, but it can still be embarrassing. If you’ve had enough of the jokes and uncomfortable moments, here are some simple tips to help you take charge of bloating and gassiness.

Our gut is full of friendly bacteria that help digest foods and produce gas in the process. Foods that are most often linked to gas include beans, lentils, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and other vegetables, as well as fructose, lactose, and more. But you don’t have to avoid all of these foods. Just a few might give you trouble.

According to Lawrence R. Kosinski, MD, MBA, a spokesman for the American Gastroenterological Association, food sensitivities may change with age, and many people develop problems digesting certain foods as they get older.

There’s a simple way to find out which foods might be causing your bloating and gas. Keep a food diary and experiment one by one with the foods you suspect. Then, gradually start eating more of the food to give your digestive system time to adjust.

You can also try digestive enzyme supplements to help break down hard-to-digest foods. Beano is a product that helps break down gas-producing sugars in beans.

Finally, pay attention to other habits that may be causing you to swallow too much air, such as chewing gum or drinking carbonated sodas. Stress can also lead to swallowing excess air and causing bloating and gas.
