According to a statement released on March 7, the company is dedicated to installing more than 60 GWh of battery storage capacity by 2040, aiming to cover 15% to 20% of the UK’s energy storage needs. Additionally, NatPower UK plans to unveil large-scale solar and wind projects later this year.

The company’s strategy includes the establishment of “GigaParks” across the nation, with the first three sites expected to apply for planning permission this year, followed by 10 more next year. To kickstart this ambitious initiative, NatPower UK has allocated GBP 600 million for the development of substations. This investment is crucial in addressing grid congestion and connection delays that pose significant challenges to the country’s transition to renewable energy.

NatPower UK emphasized the importance of battery storage in achieving net-zero emissions, highlighting its role in reducing curtailment costs, which are estimated to reach GBP 3.5 billion annually by 2030.

Stefano D. M. Sommadossi, the CEO of NatPower UK, emphasized the company’s collaboration with grid operators to invest in new substations, aiming to meet over 20% of the required infrastructure. By prioritizing energy storage and infrastructure development, NatPower UK believes that they can facilitate the next phase of the energy transition while making energy more affordable for consumers across the UK.

The UK government has set an ambitious target of achieving 100% renewable power by 2035, with plans to deploy up to 70 GW of solar capacity within the same timeframe. In a related development, the National Grid has accelerated the connection process for approximately 10 GW of battery energy storage projects in England and Wales.

In conclusion, NatPower UK’s significant investment in battery storage projects exemplifies the commitment to sustainable energy transition and the vital role of energy storage in securing a green future for the UK.
