The lawsuit alleges that Barrett met Jackson through her husband’s acquaintance with Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records, which launched in 1959 and signed the Jackson 5 in 1968, per Blackpast.

The suit further alleges that Jackson showed up at Barrett’s home unannounced and committed the alleged act with “force and violence.”

Various companies owned by Jackson, such as Jermaine L. Jackson Music Productions and Work Records, were also named as defendants in Barrett’s suit. The lawsuit cites “sexual assault, battery, sexual battery, and negligence” as the cause of Barrett’s filing.

According to people.com, Barrett is seeking compensation for “unspecified damages.” Her attorney, Jeff Anderson, told Rolling Stone, “This is about her power and the declaration of it when she learned something could be done under the law, and she found the strength and support to find us and is now standing up for herself and others.”

In addition to Jermaine Jackson, Motown Records founder Berry Gordy has been named in Barrett’s lawsuit, though he has not been listed as a defendant. Barrett reportedly alleges that Gordy decided to protect Jackson after she reported the incident to him the day after the alleged assault, due to financial interests. Furthermore, Entertainment Tonight reported that Jackson was married to Gordy’s daughter between 1973 and 1988.
