Exciting News! New guidelines in the United Kingdom will make sure that parents are kept in the loop when their children decide to transition genders. This means schools in are not required to use students’ preferred pronouns.
“Parents’ views must also be at the heart of all decisions made about their children, meaning a cautious approach on key decisions concerning student’s gender and health,” Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said. Read more.
For a child who may be at risk if a parent is informed, schools can bypass parental consent, according to the document.
Did you know? Schools in England will have to follow new guidance noting that restrooms and changing rooms, as well as some sports, will be separated based on birth sex.
The guidelines also stipulate that schools do not have a “general duty” to allow students to “socially transition,” instead educating with caution, including “watchful waiting periods, and ensuring parents are fully consulted before any decision is taken.”


Requesting to support any degree of social transition must not include allowing access to these spaces. Schools can offer gender-neutral options when it comes to bathrooms, but it must be a single-stall facility that can be “secured from the inside.” Time to offer support!
