In this year’s Game Awards, two games managed to capture attention more than any other. These were Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2. Both games competed with others fiercely and left very little room for other games to shine. It’s a bit of a bummer to see Spider-Man 2 for PS5 being nominated for seven awards and coming away with nothing.
Looking at the big picture, Sony has had a history of winning Game of the Year at the Game Awards with their high-quality, first-party games. While it’s not a great look for them, especially given their reputation, the competition was simply too fierce this time around.
Spider-Man 2 was nominated across several categories, alongside some tough competition. For example, the Game of the Year nominees included Alan Wake 2, Baldur’s Gate 3 (which ultimately won), Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
In 2023, securing a Game of the Year nomination is truly an honor in itself. The quality of the competition was steep, pitting Spider-Man 2 against acclaimed titles such as Alan Wake 2 and major franchise games like Zelda and Mario.
When you consider the Best Game Direction category, it’s understandable why it was tough for Spider-Man 2 to come out on top, with competitors featuring complex storylines and expansive gameplay.
In the Best Narrative category, Alan Wake 2 was a natural winner, considering how much that game focuses on narrative storytelling. Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty also made strong cases, leaving Spider-Man 2 with an honorable nomination.
It’s clear that Hi-Fi Rush was destined to win Best Audio Design, leaving Spider-Man 2 competing in an incredibly tough category.
Despite the disappointing outcome, receiving seven nominations at the Game Awards is nothing to scoff at, making it a notable achievement for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. For further details, you can read the full article here.
