Nearly four decades have passed since a group of high school students from Shermer High in the Chicago suburbs spent a day in detention together, forming the iconic “Brat Pack” in the process as depicted in the film The Breakfast Club.
The main stars of the movie, including Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, and Judd Nelson, became known as part of the Brat Pack, a term coined in 1985 to describe a group of young actors who socialized and worked together, a concept highlighted in a cover story by New York magazine.
The early Brat Pack films, such as Taps in 1981 and The Outsiders in 1983, featured rising talents like Sean Penn and Tom Cruise. This group expanded to include other actors like Robert Downey Jr., with the core five from The Breakfast Club remaining the epitome of the club’s essence, alongside actors from St. Elmo’s Fire released in 1985.
“The Brat Pack” was a label created by the media to categorize these actors, although some like Andrew McCarthy expressed their disagreement with the term years later, claiming the group was more of a concept than a reality.
Despite the controversy, the Brat Pack designation did not bother all members, with Anthony Michael Hall sharing in a 2020 interview that he was not even present during the interview that sparked the term, showing that the group’s association was more of a media creation.
While they were not an actual pack, these actors were connected through their appearances in similar coming-of-age films, making the Brat Pack designation a memorable one due to its resemblance to the Rat Pack from the 1960s.
Building on the Brat Pack legacy, Vogue introduced a “New Brat Pack in 2015, featuring modern-day celebrities like Justin Bieber, Kendall Jenner, and Gigi Hadid, who, despite not acting together, were known for their public personas influenced by reality TV and social media.
