Native Italy risks losing both of its grands prix on the calendar, according to Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.
At present, both Monza and Imola are on the schedule, and Domenicali admits that the latter played a role in helping the sport navigate the pandemic era.
“Covid-19 could have been deadly for Formula 1,” he told the Rai radio program La Politica nel Pallone.
F1 has shown growth and has become one of the most followed sports platforms in the world.
However, concerns linger about F1’s popularity as Red Bull and Max Verstappen continue to dominate.
Domenicali insists that despite Verstappen’s dominance, this past season was extremely positive overall for Formula 1.
F1 is evolving, including the introduction of Saturday sprint racing, which will be adjusted for 2024.
“All sports are changing. Everyone has to pay attention to what is happening in the world,” Domenicali pointed out.
However, some long-time fans worry about the show-business aspects of the sport.
“We must have respect for those who grew up on bread and F1,” Domenicali stressed.
Domenicali also expressed his thoughts on Verstappen’s dominance and the ten-year anniversary of Michael Schumacher’s ski accident.
The interview also discussed the relationship between Formula One Management and the governing FIA.
