Hey there, Gen Zers are already emerging into the workforce, they are starting to consider their identities and how they want to show up at work. This generation emphasizes authenticity, but for non-binary or transgender persons, that could mean risking their job, which is definitely a lot to think about.

Corporate America has stepped up its support of LGBTQ+ rights. It is slowly becoming more widely accepted for individuals to be open about their sexual identity in the workplace. However, there is still much work to be done to foster a truly inclusive environment, especially with regard to gender identity. This generation’s perception of gender is unique in comparison to previous generations; a Gallup survey found that the number of Gen Z people identifying as transgender is twice that of millenials.

In this episode, we speak with Gen Z founder Yen Tan who came out during the pandemic. Although the pandemic had many negative effects, it also provided time for people to explore themselves during their time working from home. Tan has since created a truly inclusive workplace in the company they established.

According to Kat Kibben of Three Ears Media, providing pronoun education to workforces has become increasingly important. The phone calls from organizations peak during Pride Month, but Kibben emphasizes that it’s crucial work year-round, especially with the rise in anti-trans legislation. This is further supported by the fact that there are currently 583 such bills across 49 states in 2023, according to translegislation.com.

Among the proposed anti-trans bills, 14 are in Florida, Lana Patel’s home state. In this episode, she shares her first-hand experience about transitioning and the lack of support she received from employers over the years. Today she works at Plume, a gender affirming health care company for the gender diverse community as the PR and government affairs liaison.

Season two of The Return, hosted by Cloey Callahan and produced by Digiday Media’s audio producer Sara Patterson, provides insight into what inspires and motivates the youngest generation of workers, who are often depicted as work-shy.
