Spotify is enhancing its competition with YouTube Music by introducing full music videos in 11 different countries. Here is the latest update on this new feature.
The beta release of music videos for Spotify Premium subscribers is now available in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya. Users in these regions with a Premium subscription can simply switch to the video option on various devices such as iOS, Android, PC/Mac, or TV, to enjoy watching the music video of a particular song.
Spotify is actively seeking feedback from both users and artists in order to continually improve and update this feature. The goal is to establish Spotify as a centralized platform for music consumption, allowing listeners the option to watch music videos directly on the app without having to navigate to YouTube.
“In many instances, music videos are instrumental in engaging audiences and transitioning them from casual listeners to devoted fans,” states Charlie Hellman, Vice President and Head of Music Product at Spotify. “They are a crucial component of an artist’s toolkit, and it makes perfect sense for them to be integrated within a platform that attracts over half a billion music enthusiasts.”
Spotify believes that offering full music videos will provide artists with additional avenues to connect with both new followers and existing fans. In the past, Spotify has introduced various video features like Canvas and Clips, along with providing artists with opportunities to showcase their music in Artist Bios through live events and merchandise offerings.
The initial release of music videos on Spotify will feature a curated selection of popular music videos from international stars like Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, Ice Spice, as well as local talents such as Aluna and Asake.
While it remains uncertain when Spotify will allow all artists to upload their music videos on the platform, this is the direction that Spotify is moving towards. By aiming to become a comprehensive platform for audio enthusiasts, Spotify is catering to music lovers who have a keen interest in music videos as well.
