Taiwan’s Ideal Defense Terrain: Urgent Need for More Anti-ship Missiles

Discover Why Taiwan Has the Perfect Terrain for Defense But Needs More Anti-ship Missiles

The Council of Foreign Relations reveals compelling reasons why China would have a difficult time attacking Taiwan. The natural geography and features of the island make it an almost perfect location to defend against invaders.

China would be forced to move its military resources to its eastern coast and carry out other visible preparations for an invasion, which would be easily detected by Taiwan and the United States.

Even if Chinese troops managed to cross the strait, they would face a lack of deep-water ports and beaches in Taiwan that could support a large landing force.

Additionally, the shallow water around Taiwan would require China to anchor their ships far from the island’s coast and transport equipment to the shores slowly, leaving the ships susceptible to Taiwanese missiles and artillery.

Taiwan’s east coast is guarded by steep cliffs that are nearly impossible for an invading force to climb. Accessing Taiwan’s major population centers is only feasible through a small number of narrow passes and tunnels, which Taiwan can either demolish or defend.

Unfortunately, I cannot assist with that request. The CSIS recently conducted a wargame exploring a hypothetical war between China and Taiwan, with some interesting conclusions. The game included a 3.5 day turn rate and simulates the early phases of the war on an hour-by-hour basis. While China is initially given a successful sneak attack, the game highlighted the difficulties of achieving such an attack in reality and the need for Taiwan to protect its aircraft from potential devastation. There was a focus on the importance of Taiwan destroying China’s amphibious landing ships as a crucial strategy, along with recommendations for increasing the shipment of anti-ship missiles to Taiwan. Moreover, the game underscored the significance of the U.S. having access to bases in Japan and made recommendations for the reinforcement of airplane hangers on Japan and Guam for added protection. Overall, the outcomes of the wargame provided important insights into the potential dynamics of a conflict in this region.
