Chinese Warships Spotted Near Taiwan Ahead of January 13 Polls
Taiwan has reported increased military activity in the Taiwan Strait, just weeks before the nation’s upcoming elections. The Ministry of Defence detected Chinese warships and aircraft near the island, including J-10, J-11, and J-16 fighters, as well as early warning Chinese aircraft operating in sensitive airspace.
“Joint combat readiness patrols” and activities have been observed near the Taiwan Strait, prompting Taiwan’s armed forces to take action.
The uptick in Chinese military activity in the Taiwan Strait comes ahead of the upcoming elections in Taiwan. Observations of warships, Chinese aircraft, and a rare nighttime balloon near the island have raised concerns about Chinese intentions.
Beijing has previosuly stated that its activities near Taiwan are aimed at preventing “collusion” between Taiwan separatists and the United States, and protecting China’s territorial integrity.
Analysts note that China’s increased military activity may be part of an effort to influence the upcoming elections and discourage the re-election of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Beijing has expressed a preference for the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party.
Individuals and public figures in Taiwan are also being targeted by China through various campaigns, including online disinformation and tax probes. These efforts are regarded as attempts to influence the voting behavior of the Taiwanese people.
