Thailand Lawmakers Embrace Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage

Thailand Makes Historic Move Towards Marriage Equality

In a groundbreaking decision, lawmakers in Thailand’s lower house of Parliament have overwhelmingly passed a marriage equality bill. This move would establish Thailand as a pioneer in Southeast Asia by legalizing equal marriage rights for individuals of any gender.

The bill was met with strong support, as 400 out of 415 members of the House of Representatives present voted in favor, with 10 opposing, two abstaining, and three not casting a vote. The proposed amendment to the Civil and Commercial Code seeks to replace gender-specific terms like “men and women” and “husband and wife” with more inclusive language such as “individuals” and “marriage partners.” This change aims to grant LGBTQ+ couples equal access to legal, financial, and medical rights.

The next step for the bill is the Senate, where it is expected to pass without major obstacles. Once approved by the Senate, the bill will then be presented to the king for royal endorsement. If successful, Thailand would become the first country in Southeast Asia and the third in Asia, following Taiwan and Nepal, to enact such progressive legislation.

Danuphorn Punnakanta, a spokesperson for the ruling Pheu Thai party, emphasized in Parliament that the amendment is designed to benefit all individuals in Thailand, irrespective of their gender identity. He assured that the proposed changes would not infringe on the rights of heterosexual couples but rather restore fundamental rights to the LGBTQ+ community.

While the bill garnered widespread support, some activists were disappointed by the exclusion of the term “parent” alongside “father and mother.” This omission could potentially limit the ability of certain LGBTQ+ couples to establish families and raise children.

Despite Thailand’s reputation for tolerance and diversity, the country has faced challenges in passing marriage equality legislation for many years. The current administration under the leadership of the Pheu Thai party has prioritized marriage equality as a key agenda item since taking office.
