Do you think washing your hands before putting in your contact lenses is enough to maintain good eye health? Think again! As it turns out, your eyes can get sick or infected just like any other part of your body.
One of the most common but rarely discussed eyelid diseases is Demodex blepharitis. To learn more, we spoke with Neda Shamie, M.D., an ophthalmologist and a cataract, LASIK, and corneal surgeon based in Los Angeles.
Curious to know more about Demodex blepharitis and how it’s caused? Read on.
According to Dr. Shamie, Demodex blepharitis is caused by an infestation of Demodex mites, the most common species of ectoparasite (parasites that attach themselves to human skin).
And how do you know if you have it? Look out for redness or inflammation around the eyes, missing or misdirected eyelashes, and the presence of collarettes. Curious about what collarettes are? Let’s find out.
Collarettes are cylindrical, waxy, crusty debris of mite waste and eggs found at the base of the eyelashes. Dr. Shamie says that 100% of patients with collarettes have Demodex blepharitis.

Collarettes are the telltale sign of Demodex blepharitis. Note the waxy cylindrical debris at the base of the lashes and the misdirected and abnormal eyelashes.
Prevention is key. But can you prevent Demodex mite infestation?
Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to prevent Demodex blepharitis, as the mites can infiltrate the eyelid for no apparent reason. But maintaining healthy eye habits, such as regular eye exams and removing eye makeup every night, is always a good idea.
But can you tell if you have Demodex blepharitis without consulting an eye doctor?
The answer is no, only an eye care provider can properly diagnose Demodex blepharitis. So, make sure to prioritize your eye health and seek professional help if you experience any discomfort or notice anything unusual.
