Exploring the Concept of Adult Sabbaticals
The concept of taking an adult sabbatical is not a new one, especially in Europe where it is quite common. Many individuals choose to take a “gap year” either after high school or after college before starting their corporate careers. This period is often spent traveling the world, following well-known routes outlined in travel guides.
Corporate vacation policies in America and Europe showcase a stark difference in philosophies around leisure time. While the standard paid leave in the US is typically 10 days, workers in Europe usually benefit from a minimum of 35 days of paid leave each year. As a result, the idea of Americans taking extended breaks from work was not common until recently.
During my research on mid-career transitions, I came across a group of individuals in corporate America who were deliberately choosing to take a break from their careers. The pandemic brought about significant changes in how we work and live, leading to a wave of individuals questioning the belief that extended leisure can only be pursued in retirement.
Interviewing Individuals on Mid-Career Breaks
In my quest for understanding mid-career pauses, I interviewed individuals who had decided to step away from the workforce for at least a year. I delved into their motivations for taking this step, the financial concerns they faced, and most importantly, what they hoped to achieve from this experience.
Taking the Leap into a Solo Sailing Adventure
While on vacation in Europe, Bryan Reed received a life-changing call in his Amsterdam hotel room, a common occurrence in the competitive Bay Area tech industry. His girlfriend, Erin, encouraged him to pursue his dream of sailing to Hawaii, sparking a journey of self-discovery.
Bryan reflected on the stress that had been building up since the start of the pandemic. Initially enjoying the remote working setup as an introvert, he began feeling restless as time went on. Hoping for a change, Bryan switched jobs but faced layoffs at the new startup. This prompted him to seriously consider his long-held dream of sailing to Hawaii.
Embracing a Mid-Career Pause
The trend of individuals investing in mid-career breaks is on the rise, with more people recognizing the value of taking time off to reassess their priorities and pursue personal passions. Whether it’s setting sail on a solo adventure or exploring new avenues, the concept of a mid-career pause is gaining traction as individuals seek to find fulfillment outside traditional work structures.
