Welcome to Essential Guitar Tracks! Each week, we bring you a selection of songs from across the guitar universe. Our aim: to showcase music where our favorite instrument is the star of the show.
We’re committed to letting you know about the biggest tracks, the top editor’s picks, and anything cool you might have missed. We’re breaking boundaries and taking you out of your comfort zone – because, as guitarists, that’s what we should all be striving for in our playing!
Let’s take a look at what happened over the past seven days – now with a Spotify playlist to enjoy…
The Black Keys – Beautiful People (Stay High)
Beautiful People (Stay High) returns with a bang and proves that no guitar fireworks are needed in a Black Keys song. This energetic comeback from Ohio’s finest rock combo focuses on doling out the funkiest riffs. Interestingly, Auerbach’s slinky leads are seasoned with a healthy dose of fuzz. (JM)
The Black Crowes – Wanting and Waiting
The news of Black Crowes’ return with their first album in 15 years is accompanied by a rip-roaring lead single Wanting and Waiting that’s a sultry, swampy romp, supercharged with greasy guitar grooves and blues-y exchanges. It’s definitely worth the wait. (MO)
Waxahatchee – Right Back to It (feat. MJ Lenderman)
Katie Crutchfield’s Waxahatchee project brings us Right Back to It, featuring the unique talents of MJ Lenderman – demonstrating beautiful textures and a stunning solo on this unhurried waltz. (JM)
Slift – Weavers’ Wift
The Sub Pop signed French trio is up next for Mastodon’s mind-expanding metal crown. The latest taster of their new album, Ilion, is laced with intricate guitar, from ringing psychedelia to riffs that recall Gojira’s terraforming scale. It’s an out-of-this-world experience. (JM)
