Senator Wyden’s explosive revelation about the privacy breach by the tech giants came to light in a recent letter he wrote to the US Department of Justice. Wyden demands a change in regulations as he believes that the surveillance infringes upon the privacy rights of individuals.

How Are Law Enforcement Agencies Spying Through Push Notifications?
Push notifications are delivered using Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging on Android and Apple’s Push Notification Service on iOS. On both platforms, every user is assigned a “push token”. This token is then transferred between the push notification service on the respective platform and the app.
The senator and his team have been investigating the tip they received, spending the past year in touch with the tech giants implicated. Law enforcement agencies can make use of these push tokens to identify a user and find out who they might have been communicating with. They can request information on the account associated with the token, including metadata linked to the push notifications, from the app developer and the OS maker.
Wyden Calls for Increased Transparency on Push Notification Surveillance
In response to this alarming discovery, Ron Wyden has called for a change in current laws that restrict transparency about compelled surveillance. He believes that unless prohibited by a specific court order, companies should be able to notify individuals if they are under surveillance.
