Tracking the Serenades of Skywalker Gibbons: A Love Story Unveiled

Researchers in Myanmar eavesdropped on the romantic melodies sung by Skywalker gibbons (Hoolock tianxing) to pinpoint the largest known population of this endangered species. Each day, pairs of Skywalker gibbons serenade each other, their songs resonating through the forest canopies. These love songs helped scientists confirm their suspicions that Myanmar is home to the largest population of Skywalker gibbons in the world. This groundbreaking discovery was detailed in a study published on February 14 in the International Journal of Primatology.

Discovering the Skywalker Gibbons

“We were able to genetically identify 44 new groups of Skywalker gibbons in Myanmar,” stated study co-author Tierra Smiley Evans, a wildlife veterinarian and epidemiologist at the University of California, Davis.

Officially known as Skywalker hoolock gibbons, these creatures were given their unique moniker by a group of Star Wars enthusiasts in 2017, after observing their behavior in southwestern China. While omnivorous, Skywalker gibbons primarily feed on plants, with figs being their favorite meal, supplemented occasionally with spiders and bird or chicken eggs. Standing at an average height of 32 inches and weighing between 13 and 15 pounds, these primates are a fascinating species.

Although the exact population of Skywalker gibbons remains uncertain, their presence in areas previously thought to be inhabited by the Eastern hoolock gibbon indicates an interesting overlap. Previous estimates from 2013 suggested that the identified Skywalker habitats may have once hosted up to 65,000 gibbons.

While these newly discovered groups represent a significant concentration of Skywalker gibbons in one area, their numbers are believed to have decreased due to various factors like habitat loss, hunting, and political instability in Myanmar.

Seranading in the Forest

With an inability to swim, rivers naturally act as boundaries for Skywalker gibbons, influencing their territorial range. Researchers speculated that these primates spread between two western rivers and one eastern river in Myanmar.

From December 2021 to March 2023, a local field team in Myanmar utilized innovative acoustic monitoring systems to capture the morning melodies of Skywalker gibbons. By recording their vocal performances and collecting chewed plants and fruits left behind by the gibbons, the researchers could confirm the presence of these unique creatures based on their DNA samples.

Utilizing images, the team identified physical features that distinguish Skywalker hoolock gibbons from other hoolock species, adding to their understanding of this fascinating primate.
