Tragic workplace shooting in Greece leaves 3 dead, including gunman

A tragic incident unfolded at a Greek shipping company in Glyfada, a suburb of Athens, where a former employee went on a shooting rampage, resulting in the deaths of two men and a woman before taking his own life. The perpetrator, identified as a 70-year-old Egyptian national, had recently been terminated from his position at the company.

The gunman entered the company’s offices with a hunting rifle, a weapon later found next to his body. He proceeded to shoot his victims on different levels of the building, including the owner of the company, before barricading himself inside, prompting a standoff with law enforcement.

Police, along with counter-terrorism officers, surrounded the premises, establishing a secure perimeter and deploying negotiators in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully. Despite efforts to persuade the gunman to surrender, he ultimately took his own life.

Witnesses shared harrowing accounts of the incident, with one employee recounting the chaos and fear that gripped the workplace as gunshots rang out. Thanks to quick thinking and a swift escape, this individual managed to evade the violence and seek safety.

Greece maintains strict gun control regulations, resulting in a lower gun ownership rate compared to countries like the United States. While shootings are infrequent in the country, organized crime remains a concern, contributing to instances of gun-related violence.
