The Value of Generative AI Tools in Social Apps

Many may question the value of the generative AI tools found in social apps today, as they seem to diminish the human “social” aspect with automated replies and interactions. However, these tools continue to evolve and showcase their capabilities in various ways.

X’s Latest Release: The Grok AI Chatbot

X (formerly Twitter) has recently made headlines by sharing the internal code base of its “Grok” AI chatbot. This innovation allows X Premium+ users to receive witty and sarcastic responses to inquiries, drawing from X’s extensive real-time updates database.

According to xAI:

“We are unveiling the foundational model weights and network structure of Grok-1, our large language model. Grok-1, a 314 billion parameter Mixture-of-Experts model, underwent comprehensive training led by xAI. This release comprises the raw base model checkpoint from Grok-1’s pre-training phase, completed in October 2023. The model remains unadjusted for any specific application, such as dialogue.”

X’s Commitment to Transparency and Bias Mitigation

This move by X reflects its commitment to transparency in the operations of its systems, aiming to eliminate bias and facilitate third-party exploration. Notably, X’s owner, Elon Musk, has been vocal about the development of AI technologies, critiquing various chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s Llama for their alleged biases.

The Risks of AI Bias

Elon Musk has raised concerns about “woke” AI and the associated risks, suggesting that an AI programmed to prioritize diversity could potentially cause harm. While the current AI capabilities may not align with such extreme scenarios, Musk’s concerns highlight the importance of non-biased AI development.

Under X’s “freedom of speech, no reach” policy, offensive content is managed by reducing its visibility without removing it entirely unless it violates legal regulations. This approach ensures that controversial content remains accessible but with limited exposure.

Grok’s Training Data and Potential Drawbacks

If Grok is trained on X’s full post corpus, it may encounter offensive yet legal content, leading to the generation of misleading or inappropriate responses. This highlights the importance of monitoring AI training data to avoid propagating harmful narratives.
