The news of Clark’s passing was confirmed by former Austin Chronicle columnist and music historian Michael Corcoran, who received the information from Clark’s manager, Vicky Moerbe. Moerbe shared that Clark had checked into Seton Hospital after a show at Giddy Ups, a venue where he had a residency for the last six years of his life. His sudden decline in health took everyone by surprise, as he had been acting out of character and not feeling like himself.

Fellow musician Carolyn Wonderland paid tribute to Clark’s legacy, highlighting his role as a bridge between different generations of Austin musicians. Clark’s willingness to share his knowledge and spotlight with others endeared him to many aspiring artists, making him a beloved figure in the local music scene.

Clark’s journey in music began in his youth, growing up in Austin and immersing himself in gospel music through church choirs. He honed his guitar skills in the early ’50s, landing his first paying gig with T.D. Bell’s band, the Cadillacs, at the age of 16. His talent caught the attention of Joe Tex, who invited him to join his band for a tour in the late ’60s, marking a significant milestone in Clark’s career.

Known for his unique blend of Texas blues and soulful Memphis sounds, Clark’s music resonated with audiences and fellow musicians alike. His solo releases, including the acclaimed Texas Soul album, showcased his musical prowess and artistry. Clark’s versatility as a musician extended beyond the guitar, as he also excelled on the bass guitar and became a sought-after sideman for various bands and artists.

Upon his return to Austin, Clark witnessed the evolution of the blues scene, with emerging talents like Jimmie Vaughan and Doyle Bramhall shaping the musical landscape. Embracing change and staying true to his musical roots, Clark continued to make an impact with his soulful performances and mentorship of up-and-coming musicians.

In honor of his legacy, we celebrate W. C. Clark’s contributions to the Austin music community and beyond. His passion for music, dedication to his craft, and everlasting influence will continue to inspire artists for years to come.
