Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has lost faith in coach Steve Kerr after being benched for the final 18 minutes of Thursday night’s loss to the Denver Nuggets, sources close to Kuminga tell The Athletic. Kuminga’s strong performance on the court was overshadowed by Kerr’s decision, adding to the turmoil of a complex Warriors season.
According to one source, Thursday’s game was the breaking point for Kuminga. He delivered an impressive performance, scoring 16 points, grabbing four rebounds, and dishing out four assists. Despite this, he was benched for the crucial final minutes of the game, leading to doubts about Kerr’s ability to nurture his potential.
The decision to bench Kuminga came just after he converted an and-1 finish, demonstrating his athleticism and growing shot-making abilities. Kerr’s explanation for the move did little to ease Kuminga’s frustration. “He was playing great,” Kerr said after the game, but the decision was made to stick with the group that was on the court at the time.
Kuminga’s absence in the latter part of the game had significant consequences, as the Warriors squandered an 18-point lead, marking the fourth time this season they’ve let such a substantial advantage slip away.
Kuminga and Andrew Wiggins are the Warriors’ two biggest wings and their best chance to improve the team’s struggling defense. Despite this, their minutes on the court together have been limited, impacting their ability to work effectively as a defensive unit.
