French Cryptography Startup Zama Raises $73 Million in Series A Funding

Zama, a cryptography startup based in France, has successfully secured $73 million in a Series A funding round. The funding was led by Multicoin Capital and Protocol Labs, with the participation of prominent figures in the crypto industry such as Gavin Wood from Polkadot and Anatoly Yakovenko from Solana.

Introducing Fully Homomorphic Encryption

Zama specializes in fully homomorphic encryption (FHE), a cutting-edge technology that enables secure data processing while maintaining privacy. The newly acquired funding will be utilized to develop applications in the fields of Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Diverse Range of Investors

Apart from Multicoin Capital and Protocol Labs, other significant investors in this round include Metaplanet, Blockchange, VSquared, Stake Capital, and Portal Ventures. Noteworthy personalities like Juan Benet, Julien Bouteloup, and Tarun Chitra have also contributed to the funding, showcasing broad support for Zama’s innovative approach.

CEO Rand Hindi expressed his pride in achieving one of the largest venture funding rounds in France’s history. Since its inception four years ago, Zama has been focused on advancing FHE technology, often referred to as the “holy grail of cryptography.”

Hindi outlined the company’s ambitious plans for 2024, emphasizing the significant potential of FHE in driving innovation across various sectors. By leveraging Zama’s Concrete framework, AI models can now be transformed into encrypted versions, enabling secure training and inference on sensitive data.

The resurgence of interest in crypto investments is evident, with VC funding for startups increasing by 2.5% to $1.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023. This positive trend signifies a renewed confidence in the crypto space, as reported by Shalini Nagarajan from Cryptonews.
