Julius Rollins of Kent State found himself in a critical situation during the MAC tournament championship game on Saturday night.
In a moment of confusion, Rollins fouled Akron’s Greg Tribble with just six seconds remaining on the clock, despite his team holding a narrow 61-60 lead. This mishap occurred right after Cli’Ron Hornbeak scored a crucial go-ahead basket, putting the Golden Flashes in the lead.
Rollins clearly misunderstood the scoreline, as he hurriedly committed a foul while his teammates were already focused on defense, under the impression that his team needed to secure another possession.
The mistake proved costly, as Tribble capitalized on both free throws, shifting the lead in favor of Akron at 62-61. Despite an attempt by Jalen Sullinger to secure a game-winning shot, the buzzer signaled Akron’s victory.
Errors are a part of life, and Rollins’ unfortunate blunder came at a pivotal moment when Kent State was on the brink of securing a spot in the NCAA tournament. Finishing with an 8-10 record in the MAC for the 2023-24 season, Kent State managed to defeat Toledo and Bowling Green, setting the stage for a potential NCAA tournament appearance for the second consecutive year.
However, it was Akron who ultimately clinched the only postseason berth from the conference, earning a ticket to the NCAA tournament for the second time in three seasons.
