A Spectacular Green Comet Approaching Earth
The comet known as 12P/Pons-Brooks, often referred to as the “devil comet,” is currently on a trajectory towards the sun with a close encounter with Earth expected later this year. This 10.5-mile-wide cryovolcanic comet orbits the sun in a highly elliptical manner every 71 years. Its surface periodically erupts due to solar radiation cracking its icy shell, resulting in the release of cryomagma – a combination of ice and gas – expanding its coma and making it appear brighter for a few days.
Recent observations in July 2023 captured 12P in a rare eruption event, sparking significant interest among astronomers. Initially, the comet’s eruptions caused a lopsided coma resembling demonic horns, but more recent eruptions have altered its appearance. Notably, the comet now emits a green glow due to high levels of dicarbon in its coma and tail, a unique phenomenon in comet observation.
Expected to make its closest approach to Earth on June 2 after orbiting the sun in late April, 12P will then retreat back into the outer realms of space, where it will remain for the next several decades. As it approaches the inner solar system, the comet currently shares the night sky with the Andromeda galaxy, offering a rare celestial spectacle. This spiral galaxy, located approximately 2.5 million light-years away from the Milky Way, is set for a future collision with our galaxy in billions of years.
Witness this extraordinary cosmic convergence in real-time through livestreams provided by the Virtual Telescope Project based in Manciano, Italy. These broadcasts will capture the comet’s journey alongside the Andromeda galaxy, presenting a captivating display of nature’s wonders.
In conclusion, the remarkable green comet 12P/Pons-Brooks presents a unique opportunity to witness the beauty and mystery of the universe as it races towards Earth in a spectacular celestial dance.
