In a candid revelation, Pierre Gasly admits that he and Esteban Ocon still have “no relationship” off the track, despite spending a year as Formula 1 teammates.
The lack of camaraderie between the two 27-year-old Frenchmen has been a theme throughout their careers, tracing back to their childhood in Normandy and their formative years in karting.
“Nationality has nothing to do with it,” clarifies Gasly, who joined Alpine from the Red Bull family this year.
“It’s the unique stories of our lives that set us apart. But our collaboration works well because we both want to win. That’s only possible if you work as a team and within the team.”
Gasly, however, does acknowledge that he and Ocon still don’t like each other.
“On a personal level, there’s no relationship between us. But I don’t need one either.”
“What I need is an Esteban who will work as hard as possible for the team. That’s enough for me.”
He stresses that he’s not obsessed with always being ahead of Ocon.
“I want to beat everyone,” says Gasly, who finished one place and four points ahead of Ocon in the 2023 drivers’ standings. “I’m not focused on him.”
“If I beat everyone, I’ll beat him too. To achieve that, I have to fully concentrate on myself and not on this rivalry.”
It has been a challenging year for Alpine F1, both in terms of performance and management, with the Renault-owned team slipping to sixth place in the constructors’ championship.
“We lack energy, particularly when it comes to electrical power,” admits Gasly when asked about the main weaknesses to address in 2024.
“But also in terms of aerodynamic development, we missed our targets.”
“We produced some good upgrades, but it was nothing compared to McLaren, for example. Aston Martin had a better start to the season than us, but we’ve closed the gap in some races, showing that we’ve improved. But not as much as we would’ve liked.”
