Leon Edwards is gearing up for his welterweight world title defense against Colby Covington this weekend, and he’s not going to be caught off guard.
Unbeaten for almost nine years, Edwards says he won’t let Covington’s trash-talking antics affect him, and he believes that it only serves to undermine his opponent.
“I just ignore it,” Edwards said. “It’s a different kind of banter from where I’m from. It’s whatever. Even outside of fighting, me and him would never be friends. We’re just two different human beings. Our morals are different as men. That’s it. It makes it easier for me to prepare, it makes it easier for me to go out and punch a hole in his face, and that’s it.”

As for Covington’s grappling-heavy approach, Edwards believes it’s all part of a carefully crafted persona designed to generate controversy.
“He comes out and plays a persona,” Edwards said. “‘I’m about to get cut from the UFC.’ It’s easier for someone like that to tolerate, just laugh at him. You’re just a f*cking weirdo. That’s it. We just take it for what it is.”
And when that cage door shuts in Las Vegas on Saturday evening, Edwards is confident that his opponent will realize it’s a different kind of fight than he’s been used to.
“He’s used to beating guys like Robbie Lawler, Jorge Masvidal, guys who are over the hill a bit. Now, going out there and beating these young, fit, hungry guys? I just can’t see him doing it.”
