The inquiries were made during the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, although the Bears have not actively sought to trade Fields. Given that the Chicago Bears hold the No. 1 pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft and have several promising quarterback prospects available, General Manager Ryan Poles may consider moving Fields, who was selected as the No. 11 pick in 2021. Despite facing challenges with pass protection from his offensive line, Fields has shown inconsistency in his performance over the past three seasons. In 13 starts during the 2023 season, he completed 61.4% of his passes for 2,562 yards, with 16 touchdown passes and nine interceptions.
Fields also demonstrated his rushing abilities by gaining 657 yards on the ground, although this was a decrease from his 1,143 rushing yards in 2022. However, there are glimpses of his skills from his time at Ohio State, making him a potentially attractive trade option for teams in need of a quarterback.
Breer mentioned that the Bears are scheduled to meet in the following weeks to discuss their plans regarding the quarterback position and are likely to make a decision once the scouting combine commences on February 26 in Indianapolis. While no official announcement has been made about the team’s future quarterback situation, indications suggest that the front office may be considering a fresh start.
The potential acquisition of USC quarterback Caleb Williams, along with the opportunity to reset the rookie contract clock for a quarterback, could prove too enticing for Chicago to ignore. Justin Fields remains on the Bears’ roster at present, but this status may change if other teams continue to express interest in acquiring him.
