The Republican Party Considers Rule Change for Epic Debate Showdown

The Republican National Committee is reconsidering their rule against unsanctioned debates for presidential candidates. This change comes in response to the lack of popular support in previous debates. The next debate, hosted by RNC and possibly the final one, could be the last of its kind. The RNC has prohibited candidates from debating one another without consent, but according to a New York Times report on Monday, they are debating dropping this requirement. This could open the door for one-on-one debates between long-shot presidential hopefuls like former New Jersey governor Chris Christie and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. The two had sought out that exact scenario for a debate that would have aired on Fox News if the RNC had not intervened. If the exclusivity pledge is dropped, it could affect the RNC’s planned January debates in Iowa and New Hampshire, allowing for independent forums to be organized.

Wednesday’s debate will feature Christie, Ramaswamy, DeSantis, and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. Once again, Donald Trump will be absent from the stage, and his strategic absences may be to blame for the low ratings in prior debates. The candidate entering the debate with the most momentum is Haley, positioning herself as the consensus alternative to Trump. She is leading in high-profile donors and among likely Republican voters in New Hampshire and South Carolina. Some Republicans are urging Christie to drop his explicitly anti-Trump campaign, assuming his supporters will move to Haley.  Christie’s numbers are favorable in New Hampshire, although he lags nationally behind DeSantis.
