Walk for Peace to Pass Through Sharpsburg Sunday, Peachtree City Monday Morning

Buddhist monks participating in a cross-country Walk for Peace pilgrimage will pass through Sharpsburg on Sunday, Dec. 28, before walking through Peachtree City on Monday morning, Dec. 29.

The monks are walking from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., as part of a months-long journey promoting peace, compassion, and unity. The walk, which began in late October, is organized by monks affiliated with the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Texas and is expected to conclude in early 2026.

According to information shared by the Walk for Peace organizers, the monks are traveling on foot to encourage mindfulness, nonviolence, and connection across communities, stopping in cities and towns along the route to meet residents and invite reflection on peace at both a personal and societal level.

On Sunday, the group will travel from Hogansville through Luthersville to Sharpsburg along Georgia Highway 54. Two public visiting opportunities are scheduled:

  • Lunch stop: 108 Hines Rd., Moreland, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Overnight rest stop: 50 Braves Crossing Dr., Sharpsburg, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Community members are invited to visit during those hours.

According to newly elected Peachtree City Council member Michael Polacek, the monks will spend Sunday night at a location in Sharpsburg roughly a mile outside Peachtree City and are expected to begin walking again around 7 a.m. Monday, reaching Highway 54 in Peachtree City between approximately 7:30 and 8 a.m.

Polacek said the city plans to assign a police officer to follow the group when they are near the roadway, occupying the lane behind them to ensure traffic clears safely. He said the walk may cause temporary traffic disruptions, but no full lane closures are expected.

Polacek noted the information is subject to change but reflects the city’s latest update. Residents interested in observing the walk can expect to see the group along Highway 54 between about 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Monday.A live map of the group’s progress and additional information about the pilgrimage are available through the official Walk for Peace social media pages.
