Introducing Worldcoin’s New and Improved Identity-Verifying Orb with a More Friendly Interface

Worldcoin, the Sam Altman-backed oddball venture vying to use an eye-scanning metal orb to verify human identities, is reportedly trying to cut back on its creep factor. Taking a page out of Apple’s playbook, the company is reportedly planning to release a new version of its iris-scanning orb in multiple colors and form factors later this year according to a TechCrunch interview with Alex Blania, a cofounder of the company developing Worldcoin. Those design changes are reportedly intended to make the at times ominous looking orb appear “much more friendly” and temper the device’s dystopian perception among some of its critics.

What is Worldcoin’s Orb?

Worldcoin is envisioning a future where the internet is filled with AI powered spam bots pretending to be human. In this scenario, reliable identity verification becomes crucial.

That’s where Worldcoin’s basketball-sized “Orb” device comes in. It scans a person’s eyeball, creates a numerical code based on the unique features of their iris pattern, and uses it to generate a one-of-a-kind “World ID.” This unique ID would be used to log into websites and verify the human identity across the internet. People can find” orb locations spread across offices and other places in 11 countries. Okta, an access management firm, is already offering “Sign in with Worldcoin” service on its systems.

Worldcoin claims that this biometrics-based identity verification method is more secure and privacy-preserving than others, as the World ID isn’t linked to other personal identifiers like name, email, and address.

In some countries, Worldcoin offers a small chunk of its own WLD cryptocurrency token in exchange for an iris scan as an incentive.  More than 3.1 million people across 120 countries had verified their identity with an Orb as of mid-December.

However, Worldcoin’s global sign-up surge has faced some obstacles. In the US, regulatory uncertainty prevented the company from offering its coin in exchange for eye scans, which may have dampened signup interest. In Kenya, Worldcoin faced government resistance and was banned after reportedly ordered to cease collecting iris scans, and as of December, is no longer offering its Orb-verification services in India, Brazil, or France.
