Tesla’s Massive 2 Million Vehicle Recall: EV Maker’s Biggest Yet

Tesla Inc. is making its largest recall to date, pulling more than 2 million vehicles in the U.S. due to a warning-lights issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a statement, warning that the smaller font size of the warning lights on the instrument panel could make critical safety information hard to read, potentially increasing the risk of a crash. The NHTSA indicated that 2.19 million vehicles could be affected.

The NHTSA emphasized that these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards number 105 and 135 due to the incorrect font size displayed on the instrument panel for the Brake, Park, and Antilock Brake System (ABS) warning lights.

Tesla is releasing an over-the-air software update, free of charge, and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on March 30, 2024, according to the NHTSA.

Additionally, the NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation has upgraded a 2023 probe into steering problems affecting an estimated 334,569 Tesla electric vehicles to an engineering analysis, bringing the investigation a step closer to a recall. The probe, which was opened in July 2023, is related to Tesla’s 2023 Model 3 and Y, according to the NHTSA.
